John Boston Premium Lager Launch: Royal Botanic Gardens

Located about 50 metres from the Rose Garden Pavilon is a plague marking the actual spot where John Boston's original windmill stood which brewed the first beer in Sydney back in 1796. He was a republican, surgeon, apothecary, opportunist, schemer, salt-maker, trader and brewer and today his recipe for beer is 100% natural with no preservatives or additives. Today Bruce Peachey is the brewing brain behind John Boston Premium Lager who also developed the Blue Tongue brand. Delightful canapés were supplied by Belinda Franks Catering which were designed to go with the medium bodied beer which I found refreshing and quite drinkable while still appreciating it's range of flavour. Thanks to Stewart White from Whiteworks Public Relations for inviting me along to this historic event.

John Boston brews again

The gentrification of the Australian brewing landscape was given a kick-along this week with the launch of John Boston Premium Lager. This 100 per cent Australian newcomer – and that’s a change from the majority of foreign owned, once-Aussie breweries – elevates beer to the same level of sophistication as wine. And not surprisingly, as it was initially crafted to satisfy the discerning palates of the 55,000 members of The Wine Society.

John Boston is named after the man who became Australia’s first brewer in 1796, when he built a mill in Sydney to produce his beer – which would have been a godsend to the rum-soaked young colony. In late 1804, trading opportunities took him to Tonga where he received a warm welcome and was invited to a banquet. If the story is true, he was the main course.

John Boston Premium Lager

I tried this tasty brew the other day and thought it was such a tasty lager that is deserved a mention.

I found this to be a medium bodied flavorsome Lager that’s both refreshing and thirst quenching. It would go down well when admiring your freshly cut lawn on a hot summers afternoon.

New Wine Society beer set to create a brew-haha

FOOD Detective's traditional response when offered a glass of beer by a clearly under stocked host is to run screaming for the hills.

While she's no connoisseur of the amber nectar, she does feel that many local brews have all the complexity of a Big Brother contestant.

So she's intrigued to hear of John Boston Premium Lager, a tipple created not by one of the multinationals who dominate the Australian beer industry but by The Australian Wine Society. This 55,000-member independent wine appreciation club, clearly unappreciative of what they've been finding in their schooners of a Sunday afternoon down the pub, set about addressing the problem by briefing master brewer Bruce Peachey to create a beer displaying the same complexities of flavour, aroma and texture as those found in premium wines. The result is what Peachey terms a "luxury lager" with "seductive fresh floral aromas ... medium bodied and malty".

John Boston elevates lager to a new level: AUS

John Boston Premium Lager was released in Australia this week.

The newcomer elevates beer to the same level of sophistication as wine, having been initially crafted to satisfy the palates of the 55,000 members of The Wine Society.

The premium craft beer was created by master brewer Bruce Peachey to a specific brief prepared by The Wine Society members. His mission was to produce a beer displaying the same complexities of flavour, aroma and texture as those found in premium wines.

John Boston Premium Lager is named after the free settler who became the colony’s first brewer in 1796.

Produced by The Wine Society, it is 100 per cent Australian-owned (in a landscape of foreign-owned Australian beers) and profits from the brewing venture will fund continued benefits for members of the Society.

The Wine Society is Australia’s oldest independent wine club. It was established in 1946 to advance wine appreciation and education, to promote excellence in the wine industry, and to offer members selected wines at the best prices possible. It now operates its own retail stores.

Ale's Well

While wine diversification and education have convinces us there's a wine for every occasion, one conspicuous exception remains. There's no wine for the occasion when we're dying for a beer.

Banished from the dinner table by the elitism and energetic promotion of wine, beer has patiently waited for a comeback to the fine-dining table as a beverage that can match much of wine's assumed sophistication.

Many food professionals declare a personal preference for the aromatics and flavour delicacy of beer as a food partner, and for its ability to cleanse and refresh the palate throughout a meal. And there's no prize for guessing what everyone hangs out for at the end of the day in a restaurant kitchen and even a winery. Beer is the ultimate thirst quencher and palate reviver.

The thirst fleet sets sail again

A new drop honouring beer pioneer John Boston rekindles the debate over who was our first brewer.

The jury is still out on who was the country's first brewer - James Squire or John Boston. Squire's name lives on as the regular brand range produced by Chuck Hahn's Malt Shovel Brewery, while John Boston Premium Lager has just been launched by The Wine Society.

Squire arrived in Sydney, as a convict on the First Fleet in 1788, while Boston, a free settler and surgeon, landed on these shores six years later.

Records show both men were brewing by 1796 - by which time Squire had been conditionally pardoned - but it's less clear who produced beer first.

To cloud matters further, Squire told an 1820 inquiry he initially brewed beer for army officers from a shipment of English malt and hops that arrived in Sydney in 1793.

Premium Lager Recalls Brewing Past

John Boston Premium Lager has launched as a reaction to what its makers are calling ‘'the increasing sophistication of Australian beer drinking'.

The newcomer aims to elevate beer to the same level of sophistication as wine, having been initially crafted to satisfy the discerning palates of the 55,000 members of The Wine Society

The premium craft beer has been brewed to a specific brief prepared by the society's members.

John Boston Premium Lager is named after the free settler who became the colony’s first brewer in 1796.

The task of turning the John Boston concept into a product was placed in the hands of former Lion Nathan head brewer Bruce Peachey, previously charged with the responsibility of producing Guinness and Lowenbrau’s legendary beers under licence in Australia.
